How to add robots.txt, llms.txt and schema to a Wix site
On Wix, all three are managed from your dashboard under SEO & GEO > Tools and settings. Edit robots.txt in the Robots.txt Editor. Wix generates llms.txt for you on premium sites with a custom domain, and you can edit it or opt out. Add schema as JSON-LD: up to five markups per page, each under 7,000 characters. Then check the live URLs.

- No file uploads: on Wix you don't upload robots.txt or llms.txt. You edit both in the dashboard, under SEO & GEO > Tools and settings.
- robots.txt has a reset button: the Robots.txt Editor lets you change the file and go back with Reset to Default. Wix calls it an advanced feature that Customer Care can't help with.
- llms.txt is automatic: Wix generates and maintains it for sites on a premium plan with a connected custom domain and search engine indexing enabled. Once you edit it, it stops updating automatically until you reset it.
- Schema is JSON-LD only: each markup must be under 7,000 characters, with up to five markups per page. Store products, Bookings services, Blog posts and Events get preset markup by default.
- Wix shows AI bot visits: the SEO reports include AI Bot Traffic over Time and AI Bot Visits by Page, so you can see which AI bots read your pages.
- Google doesn't need llms.txt: Google says you can ignore AI text files like llms.txt for Google Search. They're aimed at other AI tools and agents.
Before you start
You need three things:
- Dashboard access to the site, as the owner or with a role that can change SEO settings.
- A premium plan and a connected custom domain, if you want Wix's llms.txt. Wix lists both, plus search engine indexing, as requirements.
- Your rules written down. Decide which AI bots you want to let in before you touch robots.txt. If you don't have the files yet, the free Web2Agents .txt generator builds a robots.txt and llms.txt you can paste in.
Step 1: Set your robots.txt rules
robots.txt tells crawlers, including AI search bots, which parts of your site they may access. It's the file most likely to hide you from AI answers by accident, so start here.
Where to edit it
According to Wix's robots.txt help article:
- Go to SEO & GEO in your site's dashboard.
- Scroll down to Tools and settings and click Robots.txt Editor.
- Click View File.
- Add your rules under This is your current file.
- Click Save Changes, then Save.
If something goes wrong, Reset to Default brings back Wix's original file. Wix warns that robots.txt is an advanced feature and that its Customer Care team can't help with your edits, so keep a copy of the original before you change it.
What to put in it
A sensible starting point for a site that wants to be cited by AI assistants but opt out of AI training looks like this:
# AI search and user-triggered fetchers: allowed, so you can be cited
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
User-agent: Claude-User
User-agent: PerplexityBot
User-agent: Perplexity-User
Allow: /
# AI training: opted out
User-agent: GPTBot
User-agent: ClaudeBot
User-agent: Google-Extended
User-agent: Applebot-Extended
Disallow: /
Add these groups to the file Wix gives you. Don't delete Wix's existing lines or its Sitemap: line.
One Wix-specific check: a crawler follows only the group that matches its name most specifically, as Google's robots.txt specification explains. So OAI-SearchBot reads its own group and ignores any Disallow lines under User-agent: *. If Wix's default file blocks paths for everyone, copy those Disallow lines into your allowed group too.
If you're happy for your content to be used in AI training, leave out the second group. That's a business choice, not a technical one. For the reasoning behind each bot, see our guide on allowing AI search bots while blocking AI training.
Check each bot's role before copying a block list
Wix's help article on blocking AI crawlers gives an example list that disallows CCBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and BingAI. That fits a site that wants to keep AI tools out. If you want to appear in AI answers, read what each bot does first. According to OpenAI's crawler documentation, GPTBot is used for training, OAI-SearchBot decides whether you're shown in ChatGPT search, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user asks. The same Wix article notes that blocking AI crawlers may also limit NLWeb, Wix's feature for AI agent access.
Step 2: Check and edit your llms.txt
llms.txt is a short Markdown file that gives AI agents a map of your key pages, following the llms.txt proposal. On Wix you don't have to write it: Wix generates it for you.
Find the file Wix made
According to Wix's llms.txt help article:
- Go to SEO & GEO in your dashboard.
- Scroll down to Tools and settings and click Go to llms.txt.
- Click View File.
If you don't see it, check the requirements: a premium plan, a connected custom domain and search engine indexing enabled. Wix's GEO features page says the file came first to sites on premium eCommerce plans, with the goal of rolling it out to all users. So if your site meets the requirements and the option still isn't there, it may not have reached your plan yet.
Wix says the file only includes content that's already public on your site, never password-protected or member-only pages. If you'd rather not publish one, the same screen has a toggle to opt out.
Decide whether to edit it
Wix keeps the file up to date as your site changes. To edit it:
- On the llms.txt screen, open More Actions and click Edit file.
- Click Continue.
- Make your changes and click Save Changes.
The trade-off: once you edit the file, Wix stops updating it automatically, so your changes are kept. Click Reset to Default to go back to the generated version and resume automatic updates.
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Small site, pages rarely change | Edit it so your key pages come first, each with a one-line description |
| Store or blog that changes weekly | Keep the automatic file, and review it every few months |
| Wix's version describes you wrongly | Edit it, or fix the page content it's built from and reset |
| You don't want AI agents to have a map | Turn the file off with the opt-out toggle |
Keep expectations realistic. Google's AI optimization guide says that for Google Search you can ignore "unnecessary AI text files (like llms.txt)". An Ahrefs study of 137,210 domains found 97% of published llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026. On Wix it costs you nothing, so leave it on, but robots.txt and your page content matter more. More in our explainer what is llms.txt.
Step 3: Add and check your schema
Schema markup tells search engines and AI tools what a page is about: who runs the business, what a product costs, when an article was published. Wix already adds some of it. Your job is to fill the gaps without duplicating it.
What Wix adds for you
According to Wix's structured data help article:
- Preset markup is added by default to Wix Stores product pages, Wix Bookings services pages, Wix Blog posts and Wix Events pages.
- LocalBusiness markup is created for your homepage when you add a business name and location to your site.
- AI-generated structured data can be switched on for Wix Blog posts in SEO Settings > Blog posts > Customize defaults > Structured data markup. It doesn't overwrite your manual markup.
So the first fix for most small businesses is simple: make sure your business name, address and contact details are filled in, so the LocalBusiness markup is complete.
Adding your own JSON-LD
For anything else, such as a Service or an FAQ on a static page:
- One page: in the editor, open Pages & Menu, click the More Actions icon next to the page, then SEO basics > Advanced SEO > Structured Data Markup > + Add New Markup. Paste your JSON-LD and click Apply.
- A whole page type, such as all product pages: go to SEO & GEO > Tools and settings > SEO Settings, choose the page type and edit Structured data markup. You can use variables so each page fills in its own values.
Wix sets clear limits:
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| Format | JSON-LD only |
| Size | Under 7,000 characters per markup |
| Number | Up to five markups per page |
Wix's troubleshooting article lists the common causes of errors: HTML tags inside the JSON-LD, missing or extra commas, and curly quotes instead of straight ones. It also says to use one script tag with one main markup type. Write your JSON-LD in a plain text editor, not a word processor.
Don't double up. If Wix already outputs LocalBusiness markup on your homepage, don't paste a second Organization block that describes the business differently. And keep every value true to what's on the page: Google's guidelines expect the markup to match visible content.
What schema won't do: Google says structured data isn't required for generative AI search and there's no special schema.org markup to add (AI optimization guide). It still helps rich results. Think of schema as accurate labelling, not a ranking trick.
Step 4: Check everything on the live site
After you save, check each file in a private browser window:
- robots.txt: open
https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt. You should see your new groups and Wix'sSitemap:line. - llms.txt: open
https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. If it's missing, check the plan, domain and indexing requirements, and whether the opt-out toggle is on. - Schema: paste a page URL into the Schema Markup Validator to catch errors, and into Google's Rich Results Test to see which rich results the page qualifies for.
- AI bot visits: in your dashboard, go to All Reports and scroll to the SEO section. According to Wix's SEO reports article, AI Bot Traffic over Time and AI Bot Visits by Page show which AI bots crawl your site and which pages they request.
- Google: Google says it generally caches robots.txt for up to 24 hours, so give it a day before worrying.
Common Wix mistakes
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Copying a block list without reading it | You may block bots that put you in AI answers | Check each bot's role first |
Allowing named bots without Wix's Disallow lines |
Named bots can crawl paths blocked for everyone else | Copy those lines into each named group |
| Editing llms.txt once and forgetting it | It stops updating as your site changes | Review it, or reset to default |
| No custom domain or a free plan | No llms.txt from Wix | Upgrade and connect a domain, or skip llms.txt for now |
| Pasting schema from a word processor | Curly quotes break the JSON-LD | Use a plain text editor and straight quotes |
| A second business markup on the homepage | Two descriptions that may disagree | Complete Wix's LocalBusiness details instead |
