Do shoppers buy what AI recommends? Most check reviews and prices first

Short answer

Mostly not straight away. In a Feedvisor survey of 1,006 US shoppers, 55% had used AI to research or compare products, but only 5% buy immediately when an AI recommends something. Most go on to check reviews, compare prices or look at another retailer first. So an AI mention gets you onto the shortlist, and your reviews, prices and policies have to win the sale.

    Key facts

    • Feedvisor surveyed 1,006 US shoppers: 55% used AI to research or compare products in the past six months, 62% would never let an AI agent order and pay for them, and 5% buy immediately on an AI recommendation.
    • In PartnerCentric's survey, after an AI suggestion 33% of shoppers check reviews, 22.3% compare prices and 14.8% visit the brand's website.
    • In the same survey, 33% of shoppers say shipping and return policies often or always change what they buy.

    What happened

On 22 October, Modern Retail brought together several shopper surveys ahead of the holiday season. Its conclusion: AI assistants now win the research step, but shoppers still verify before they pay. "AI is a starting point, not a final verdict," PartnerCentric founder Stephanie Harris told the publication.

What this means for your site or store

Being recommended by ChatGPT or Google's AI is only half the job. The shopper's next stop is your reviews, your price, and your shipping and returns page, and the AI reads those same pages. Harris put it this way: "When those signals conflict, AI does not smooth it over. It surfaces the gap sooner."

Three things to check this week:

    1. Make reviews visible on product pages, not hidden behind a widget AI can't read.
    2. Keep prices, stock and delivery times the same everywhere you sell.
    3. Write shipping and return policies in plain words, on a page anyone can open.

    The technical details

AI tools read what's in your page's HTML. Reviews loaded only by JavaScript, or policies stored in a PDF, are easy for them to miss. Schema markup (code that labels products, prices and ratings for machines) makes these facts explicit, and robots.txt decides which AI bots can read your pages at all.
