How to get your website cited by ChatGPT: a 2026 checklist

Short answer

ChatGPT cites pages it can crawl, find in web search results and match to the questions it asks behind the scenes. So: allow OAI-SearchBot, get your pages indexed and ranking in Bing and Google, give each page a title and URL that say exactly what it answers, and put clear, sourced answers near the top. Being mentioned on other sites helps too. Nobody can guarantee a citation; OpenAI itself says placement is not guaranteed.

    Key facts

    • No access, no citation: OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers", though they can still appear as plain navigational links.
    • Search comes first: in an Ahrefs study of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts, 88% of cited URLs came from ChatGPT's general web search results.
    • Only about half make it: the same study found ChatGPT cites roughly 50% of the URLs it retrieves.
    • Titles decide a lot: cited pages had titles that matched ChatGPT's internal sub-questions more closely than pages it retrieved but didn't cite.
    • Readable URLs help: search results with natural-language slugs had an 89.78% citation rate, against 81.11% for those without.
    • Bing matters: in a small Seer Interactive study (February 2025), 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top 20 results for the same question.

How ChatGPT chooses which pages to cite

ChatGPT doesn't search the web for every message. When it does, OpenAI's help page on searching the web with ChatGPT explains that it sometimes works with other search providers. When it does, it typically rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries, then may send more specific follow-up queries after reviewing the first results. Google calls the same idea "query fan-out" in its guide to generative AI features in Search.

Then comes a filter. Ahrefs' study of why ChatGPT cites one page over another describes how each result comes back with a title, a URL and sometimes a short snippet. ChatGPT uses those to decide which pages are worth opening and citing. In other words, your title and URL do the first round of selling before anyone, human or AI, reads your page.

So getting cited comes down to four things:

    1. Access: OpenAI's search crawler can reach your pages.
    2. Discovery: your pages show up in the search results ChatGPT pulls from.
    3. Match: your title, URL and opening lines answer one of the sub-questions it's asking.
    4. Trust: your page is clear, specific and backed up, and other sites talk about you.

    The checklist

    # Check Why it matters How to check
1 OAI-SearchBot is allowed in robots.txt OpenAI won't show blocked sites in ChatGPT search answers Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot or a blanket Disallow
2 Your firewall or CDN doesn't block OpenAI's IP ranges OpenAI asks hosts and CDNs to allow its published IP addresses Check bot-protection settings with your host
3 Pages are indexed in Bing ChatGPT search uses partners; Seer found most citations matched Bing's top 20 Bing Webmaster Tools, URL Inspection
4 Pages are indexed in Google Google's AI features need indexed pages, and Seer still found 56% of ChatGPT citations in Google's results Google Search Console
5 Each page answers one clear question ChatGPT matches pages to specific sub-questions Can you say the page's question in one sentence?
6 Title uses the words people ask with Ahrefs found title relevance to ChatGPT's sub-questions is an important citation factor Compare your title with how a customer would phrase it
7 URL slug is readable Natural-language slugs were cited more often /blog/get-cited-by-chatgpt beats /blog/post-4812
8 Direct answer in the first two lines Easy to lift and quote accurately Read only the first paragraph: is the answer there?
9 Facts, numbers and tables, with sources Bing recommends evidence, tables and FAQs for AI answers Every number links to where it came from
10 Your brand is mentioned on other sites Web mentions were the top factor for AI Overview visibility in Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study Search your brand name in quotes, excluding your own site
11 Content is kept up to date ChatGPT tends to cite newer pages than Google's organic results Visible "last updated" date, with real changes behind it
12 You test and measure You can't fix what you don't track Monthly prompt checks, Bing AI Performance, analytics

    1. Let OpenAI's search crawler in

OpenAI runs several bots. The one that matters for citations is OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's crawler documentation says it is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features", and it recommends allowing it in robots.txt and allowing requests from OpenAI's published IP ranges. It also says changes to robots.txt can take about 24 hours to take effect in search.

You don't have to allow training to be cited. OpenAI treats GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as separate settings, so you can block one and allow the other. We show the exact lines in How to allow AI search bots but block AI training in robots.txt.

A common trap: robots.txt says "allow", but a firewall or bot-protection setting on your host or CDN quietly blocks the bot anyway. If you use one, check its AI-bot settings too.

    2. Get into the search results ChatGPT reads

This is the step most "AI visibility" advice skips. In Ahrefs' data, 88% of cited URLs came through ChatGPT's general search channel. If your page doesn't rank for the queries ChatGPT sends, it never reaches the shortlist.

    Two indexes matter:

    • Bing. OpenAI's help page lists Microsoft among the search providers it may send queries to. Seer Interactive matched more than 500 ChatGPT citations against search results for about 100 questions and found 87% of them in Bing's top 20, against 56% in Google's. It's a small, early-2025 sample, but it's a good reason to set up Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and fix any pages Bing hasn't indexed.
    • Google. Google says its AI features are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems", and that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in them. Strong Google rankings also help with every assistant that relies on the open web.

    3. Match the questions people actually ask

Ahrefs found that cited pages had titles closer in meaning to ChatGPT's internal sub-questions than pages it retrieved but skipped. In practice:

    • One page, one question. A page called "Services" answers nothing in particular. A page called "How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Lisbon?" answers something specific.
    • Write titles the way people ask. Use your customers' words, not internal jargon or a slogan.
    • Use readable URLs. Results with natural-language slugs had an 89.78% citation rate in Ahrefs' study, against 81.11% for those without.
    • Don't create a page for every variation. Google warns that mass-producing pages for each possible query to manipulate AI answers breaks its spam policies, and it doesn't work long term.

    4. Make your page easy to quote

Once ChatGPT opens a page, it needs something it can lift accurately. Bing's guidance in its AI Performance announcement is a good summary: clear headings, tables and FAQ sections; claims backed by examples, data and sources; and content kept fresh and accurate.

What that looks like on a page:

    • The answer first. Put a two- or three-sentence answer at the top, then the detail.
    • Specific facts. "Delivery in 2 to 4 working days to mainland Portugal" is quotable. "Fast delivery" isn't.
    • Tables for comparisons of prices, plans, features or options.
    • Sources linked inline, so readers and AI systems can check you.
    • Something only you can say. Google's guide asks for "non-commodity content": first-hand experience, your own data, a real point of view. A rewrite of what's already ranking gives an AI no reason to pick you over the original.

    5. Get talked about on other sites

AI assistants don't only read your site. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found that brand mentions across the web had the strongest link with appearing in Google's AI Overviews, with a correlation of 0.664, far ahead of backlinks at 0.218. That study looked at AI Overviews rather than ChatGPT, and correlation isn't proof of cause, but it points the same way as the Seer data: citations follow presence across the web.

    Honest ways to earn mentions:

    • get listed in the directories and "best X" round-ups your customers read;
    • answer questions in forums and communities where you have real expertise;
    • publish original data or a useful free tool that others want to reference;
    • ask happy customers for reviews on the platforms people check.

Don't buy fake mentions. Google says seeking "inauthentic mentions" isn't as helpful as it seems, because its spam systems work against it.

    6. Keep important pages up to date

Ahrefs analysed 17 million citations and found that AI assistants cite fresher content than Google's organic results. ChatGPT showed the strongest preference: its cited URLs were 458 days newer, on average. But freshness isn't everything. In the 1.4-million-prompt study, the median cited page was still around 500 days old.

So update your key pages when something real changes: new prices, new data, a new rule. Show a visible "last updated" date. Don't just change the date; Ahrefs notes that Google's John Mueller has warned against updating publish dates without real changes to the content.

    7. Check whether it's working

There's no single dashboard for ChatGPT citations yet, so combine a few signals:

    • Ask ChatGPT yourself. Once a month, run the 10 to 20 questions your customers ask, with web search on. Note whether you're cited, which page, and who's cited instead.
    • Bing AI Performance. Bing Webmaster Tools now shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, and the "grounding queries" behind those citations. Bing doesn't say it includes ChatGPT, but it's the closest official citation data you can get for free.
    • Google Search Console. Google points site owners to its Generative AI performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
    • Your analytics. Watch referral visits from chatgpt.com over time.

    What doesn't get you cited

    • An llms.txt file on its own. It's cheap to add and some AI tools read it, but Google says Google Search ignores it, and there's no evidence it decides ChatGPT citations. More in What is llms.txt?
    • Special "AI schema". Google says no special schema.org markup is needed for its AI features. Normal structured data still helps your pages in regular search.
    • Chopping content into tiny pieces. Google says there's no need to "chunk" pages for AI.
    • Paying for it. OpenAI's guidance on appearing in ChatGPT search describes no paid option. It ranks results on relevance and reliability, and says placement isn't guaranteed.

If you sell online, the product side works differently. ChatGPT shopping uses product feeds and its own ranking factors, which we cover in How do shoppers use ChatGPT to find products?
