Will AI agents be able to manage your WordPress site? WordPress plans built-in MCP support
Not out of the box yet, but WordPress is planning it. On 28 October 2026 the WordPress AI team proposed making agent connections native: you would tell your own AI assistant to help with your site, approve access with a sign-in link, and the agent could then work on it. The plan covers MCP support, a baseline of site “abilities” and OAuth sign-in, and targets WordPress 7.3. It is a proposal, so the final scope depends on the normal core review.

- The proposal, “WordPress for the Agentic Web”, was published on Make WordPress AI on 28 October 2026.
- It has four parts: the MCP Adapter, a baseline of site abilities, OAuth sign-in for agents, and one simple end-to-end experience.
- The target is WordPress 7.3, using the 7.2 cycle for the groundwork. The team says inclusion in core depends on technical readiness, security and the normal review process.
- Today the MCP Adapter is already a plugin on WordPress.org, and WooCommerce 11.3 moves its product and order tools onto it.
What happened
In a post called WordPress for the Agentic Web, the WordPress AI team set out how any WordPress site could work with the AI agent its owner already uses. The picture they describe is simple: you open your agent, say you want help with your site, follow a link to authorise it and sign in, and the agent gets to work. In their words, “This isn’t about putting an agent inside WordPress; it’s about making WordPress ready to work with the agents users bring.”
What this means for your site or store
Nothing changes on your site today, but it is a good moment to get ready:
- Decide what an agent may do: editing posts is not the same as changing orders or settings. Give any AI tool a user with only the permissions it needs.
- Stop pasting passwords into chats: today’s setup uses application passwords. The planned OAuth sign-in exists to replace that, so treat any shared password as temporary.
- WooCommerce stores, check your connection: WooCommerce 11.3 removes its old MCP endpoint, so tools that use it need to move to the MCP Adapter before you upgrade.
- Remember the other half: letting an agent manage your site is different from AI finding and recommending it. That still depends on robots.txt, llms.txt and schema, covered in our WordPress guide.
The technical details
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way for AI agents to use a website’s or app’s tools. The MCP Adapter plugin turns WordPress “abilities”, a registry of site functions added in WordPress 6.9, into MCP tools, with a default server at /wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server. WooCommerce 11.3 enables its product and order abilities by default and drops the /wp-json/woocommerce/mcp endpoint. The proposal would bring MCP into core and add OAuth so agents never need a pasted password.
