Do shoppers from AI chatbots spend more? Adobe says 83% more revenue per visit
Yes, at least on US retail sites. Adobe says that in September 2026, visitors who clicked through from AI tools and chatbots generated 83% more revenue per visit than visitors from other sources, like email, paid search and social, and converted 90% better. A year earlier, AI visits were worth less than half of a typical visit. If AI tools can read and recommend your pages, these are some of the most valuable visitors you can get.

- In September 2026, AI-referred visits to US retail sites brought 83% more revenue per visit than non-AI visits, the largest gap Adobe has seen this year.
- AI visitors converted 90% better. In August 2025 they converted 9% worse.
- They spent 73% more time on site, viewed 25% more pages and added products to their carts 53% more often.
- AI traffic to US retail sites grew 71% year over year, and Adobe expects it to rise 159% on Thanksgiving, 95% on Black Friday and 88% on Cyber Monday.
What happened
On 29 October, Adobe published new data on AI traffic to US retailers, based on more than 1 trillion visits to US retail sites, 100 million products and 18 categories. Many shoppers now ask AI to research products and arrive ready to buy, and the numbers have flipped in a year: AI traffic used to convert worse than other sources, and now it beats them on conversion, time on site and revenue. Search Engine Land also covered the report.
What this means for your site or store
A click from an AI tool is now worth nearly twice a typical visit, so being recommended by AI is a sales question, not just an SEO one. Three things to do before the holiday rush:
- Measure it on your own site: Adobe’s numbers are US averages. Set up a separate channel for AI referrals so you can see your own conversion rate and revenue. Our guide on tracking AI traffic and sales in GA4 shows how.
- Write pages that explain: Adobe found that AI reads best the content that explains, such as product details, buying guides, FAQs and return policies. Navigation-heavy, promotional pages give it much less to work with.
- Make sure AI can reach you: holiday AI traffic is forecast to grow fast, but only for sites AI crawlers can actually open.
The technical details
Adobe counts a visit as AI traffic when a user clicks a link inside an AI platform. AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot need access to your pages before they can show those links, so check that robots.txt doesn’t block them by mistake. Our guide on allowing AI search bots while blocking AI training covers the exact lines. An llms.txt file and clear product schema also help AI tools understand what you sell.
