Can you pay AI agents to promote your products? What Shopify’s new commission means

Short answer

Partly, and only through Shopify for now. On 27 October 2026 Shopify said its Promoted Placements beta now includes Shop Campaigns. Shopify pays the developer of an AI shopping agent 0.3% on attributed purchases of promoted catalog products, and stores running Shop Campaigns with external platforms turned on can add their own commission on top. The extra commission only applies to active US campaigns in USD and only when the buyer completes the purchase in Shop or on shop.com.

    Key facts

    • Promoted Placements is a Developer Preview: developers join from a waitlist by invitation, and Shopify says field names and behaviour may change.
    • Each promoted product carries its total commission rate next to it in the catalog results. Shopify’s own example shows 1.5%.
    • Purchases are attributed on a last non-direct click with a 7-day window.
    • Products from brands that don’t sell on Shopify never earn a commission.

    What happened

In a Shopify developer changelog post, Shopify said merchants running Shop Campaigns with external platforms turned on now include its Catalog API as one of those platforms. Their campaign budget becomes a commission for AI agent developers who send buyers to the product. For those products, the links the agent receives point to shop.com rather than the store’s own website. Shopify’s promoted placements guide asks developers to label promoted results and say they may earn a commission before a buyer acts.

What this means for your store

    1. Check your Shop Campaigns settings: if you run Shop Campaigns in the US with external platforms on, your products may already be offered to AI agents as paid placements, and those sales finish in Shop, not on your site.
    2. Watch your attribution: catalog traffic arrives with utm_source=shopify and utm_medium=catalog, so you can see it separately in your analytics.
    3. Don’t treat it as a shortcut to AI visibility: Shopify’s docs don’t say a higher commission moves a product up the list, and most AI assistants don’t use this program. Clear product data still decides what agents can find and compare. Our post on Shopify’s catalog opening to brands outside Shopify explains how the catalog works.

    The technical details

Developers opt in per saved catalog and pass its catalog_id on search_catalog calls. Promoted variants include a placement object of type affiliate with commission.percentage.value; organic results don’t. Attribution needs the buyer to follow the variant url or checkout_url exactly as returned. Adding a variant through Cart MCP or Checkout MCP doesn’t carry attribution yet.
